Did you know that in 1905, a terrible massacre rocked the area that now constitutes Nyamira County? The place was then known as Gusiiland. The killings were done by the British in an attempt to quell the proud and unconquerable Kisii. This offensive was led by colonial officer Geoffrey Northcote. In 1908, colonial administrators took over 8,000 head of cattle as a form of punishment.
