Did you know that Migori County is home to Thimlich Ohinga, a complex of stone-built ruins that has existed for over 500 years? The structure derives its name from the Luo language, with Thimlich meaning “frightening dense forest,” and Ohinga meaning “a large fortress.” The walls of Thimlich Ohinga are made up of stones that are not held together with mortar or cement. This unique construction led to its gazettement as a national monument in 1982 by the National Museums of Kenya. In 2018, the site was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
