Did you know that the name Nakuru is a corruption of the word “Nakurro” which means “the place of dust devils”?. This name was inspired by the transformation of Lake Nakuru into a dust bowl during droughts in the past. Nakuru town, which is the county’s headquarters, was established in 1904 when Arab and British traders used it as a rest point between the coast and Ugandan interior. Its function as an inland midway point for these traders earned it the title “the heart of Kenya.”
