Since the dawn of human existence, stories have been our companions, traveling alongside us through the corridors of time. Among these stories, perhaps the most compelling are those that unravel the mysteries of our own origin.   

Many Kenyans know about the Kikuyu creation myth, where the genesis of humanity unfolded through the nine daughters of Gikuyu and Mumbi. We also know about majestic descent of the Maasai from the heavens along with their cherished cattle on a vast hide unfurled from above. Yet, beyond these well-told tales lie hidden narratives, equally captivating and steeped in profound meaning.

What exactly defines a heritage site? Heritage sites are places of profound cultural, historical, scientific, or natural significance, recognised and protected for their outstanding value to humanity. They serve as tangible links to our past, showcasing the diversity and beauty that make each place unique. 

Distinguishing between natural and cultural sites, natural heritage sites are those revered for their exceptional natural features, ecosystems, biodiversity, and geology. These sites often encompass landscapes of breathtaking beauty and ecological importance. On the other hand, cultural heritage sites bear the imprints of human creativity and achievement, ranging from monuments and buildings to entire cities. 

While Kenya boasts only seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, there are numerous others awaiting international recognition. These hidden gems, brimming with outstanding universal value, are currently listed on the Tentative Lists. Although they might not have the prestigious stamp of approval just yet, their significance cannot be understated.

Streets are known to host businesses of all sorts and chief among them is the buzzing street food business. It doesn’t matter what town you are in, you’ll always catch the inviting aroma of sizzling meats, the happy dance of smoke as it escapes grills, and the sight of chefs in their unmistakable white aprons immersed in the art of food preparation. 

While we may forget the names of these streets, their aromas and delicacies linger on, waiting for us to catch a whiff of them when we revisit these spaces and yield to their endearing. As we thought about the streets whose food we remember, we couldn’t help but think about your favourite joint and the mutura, and chips mihogo that you cherish.  

For that, we invite you to journey with us as we take to different towns in our #StreetFoodKenya story collection to highlight their remarkable street food joints and delicious bites that have multitudes – travellers and natives alike – gathering around.

Africans have practised communal living for centuries; it is woven into the fabric of our cultures, and the modern age is no different. Individuals give of themselves – not for their personal benefit, but for the good of their environment and the society at large. In a capitalistic world, a person who takes on a task without the expectation of payment is referred to as a volunteer. Such an individual freely gives their time, labour, knowledge, and resources, and at the core of this generosity are values of equity and human rights.

Kenya’s healthcare industry has grown in leaps and bounds. However, like the gnarled roots of a mighty tree, its foundation extends to a past where access and equality were far from assured. 

The colonial era was characterized by the stratification of health institutions, leaving many Africans with poor access to health services, if any. As the winds of change swept through the 20th century, the landscape began to shift, resulting in a revision of healthcare policies for more inclusivity. This transformation is ongoing, and every day, strides are taken to mold the healthcare space to better cater to the needs of Kenyans.
